About Critique Night
A friendly, honest photo critique. Everyone brings 5 photos, we review them together on the big screen — anonymously and in random order — and give real, constructive feedback. Names are revealed only after each photo is discussed. You'll leave with a sharper eye and specific things to work on.
Rules
Code of conduct, venue rules, and community guidelines
Be specific and be kind. "The tilted horizon pulls my eye off the subject" beats both "it's bad" and "nice one."
Every opinion is a reading, not a verdict. Taste differs, offer yours as one view.
Critique the photograph, not the photographer. The image is anonymous on screen for exactly this reason.
The photographer listens first, responds after. Understanding how the room read your photo is the whole point.
Checklist
Gear, prep, and things to bring
First read (gut). What do I feel? Does it hold my eye, or does attention slide off? Trust the first two seconds.
Subject & intent. What's this about? Where does the frame want me to look?
Composition & structure. Framing, balance, leading lines, layers, negative space and the edges (what's clipped or leaking out).
Light & tone. Direction and quality of light; where brightness pulls the eye. Is the light doing work, or just present?
Moment & gesture. Expression, timing, the relationship between elements.
Craft in service of intent. Focus, motion, processing — then: does the technique serve the story?
Pro Tips
Insider tips, networking advice, and what to bring
Submit your strongest work, not your safest.
If it needs a paragraph to work, that's a note.
Don't over-explain your photo.
Take notes on others' photos
You'll learn as much critiquing as being critiqued.
