What to bring

Bring a camera or smartphone you’re comfortable using.

Pro Tips

Share a framing choice

Show someone one photo and explain what you kept inside the frame. This gives you a concrete way to start a photography conversation.

For a deeper exchange, ask whether a tighter crop would strengthen the subject or lose useful context.

Ask how they handled movement

Ask another photographer how they chose their shutter speed for a moving subject. Compare whether they wanted crisp detail or visible blur, rather than comparing camera brands.

A faster shutter freezes movement; a slower one shows blur. Ask what they would change if the light became dimmer.

Schedule

Arrivals and introductions

Start–+15 min: Meet the group, introduce yourself, and get your camera or phone ready; the meetup is open to every level.

Photo time and conversation

+15 min–+2 h: Photograph together, compare framing choices, then chat about capturing movement; spend the final 15 minutes sharing photos and discoveries.

Tasks

Zone-locked at 2 m

Set manual focus to 2 m, f/8, and 1/500 or faster. No autofocus, no zoom. Move your feet to put subjects at 2 m, and count how many shots land in focus. Warm up by guessing 2 m to a lamppost, then pace it out.

Manual focus locked at 2 m, f/8, 1/500 or faster. No autofocus, no zoom, no refocusing.

You've shot for 30 minutes and counted your in-focus hit rate.

For a stretch, explain why a fast shutter can stop movement but cannot fix a subject being outside the focused distance.

Manual focus 2 m, f/8, 1/500 s or faster, Auto ISO.

Don't chase it. Stay at 2 m and pre-frame the next person walking into range.

Ten shots, one spot

Choose one spot, stay there for 10 minutes, and take exactly 10 frames. Then swap spots with a partner and repeat, so you can compare both takes.

Your feet stay planted for 10 minutes. Exactly 10 frames per spot, no deleting or reshooting.

You have 10 frames from your spot and 10 from your partner's, and you've compared your best shot from each.

For a stretch, change the visual emphasis through timing or framing rather than photographing ten different subjects.

Manual focus around 2-3 m, f/8, 1/500 s or faster, Auto ISO.

Don't move. Keep the frame and wait; the street will bring a new moment. Only switch spots if yours becomes unsafe.

Edges first

For 30 minutes, shoot only frames with something meaningful at both the left and right edges, and leave the center empty. To check a shot, cover the middle third and see if the photo still works.

Every frame needs something meaningful at both the left and right edges. The center stays empty. Edge subjects can be cut off on purpose.

You've shot for 30 minutes and picked one frame that still works with its middle third covered.

For a stretch, choose edge subjects that relate through colour, shape, or gesture rather than merely filling space.

Manual focus around 2-3 m, f/8, 1/500 s or faster, Auto ISO. Use a wide focal length (28-35 mm) so both edges fit.

Don't chase it. Use a fixed detail like a sign, doorway, or lamppost as one edge, and wait for a person to fill the other.

Rules

Keep shared paths clear

Leave room for others to pass when you stop to photograph or chat.

Keep feedback welcome and respectful

Offer critique only when invited, and focus comments on the photograph rather than the person.
